Along with Sannen-zaka, Ninen-zaka (二念坂 or 二年坂) is one of the most attractive traditional streets of Kyoto. Lined with little souvenir shops, cafés, and restaurants, it is frequently crowded with tourists. Around dinnertime, however, the crowds thin out and a lovely dusk scene presents itself. Right around the corner from beautiful Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka-no-To, it's a hotspot for pretty sights.

Holy shit this picture hit me hard. I visited Japan a few years back. I had a friend living there and we went to Tokyo and I promptly blew all my money. She had to go back to work half way through my vacation, so I took a bus down to Kyoto and spent my second week there with like $200 left to spend for a whole week. I found a cozy little guest house off the main roads, ate at little family restaurants, saw the temples and shrines because they were cheap, and mostly just wandered the city for a week on foot because I couldn't afford a cab and had plenty of time to walk. I remember walking home one night from the other side of the city. It was one of my last nights in the country, and I wanted to walk down this exact street one more time before I left. It looked almost exactly like this. Just the streetlights and me. It was winter, so there were already fewer tourist than normal and all the other shoppers had already turned in. I took my time as I walked the street and savored every moment of it. I wanted to stay forever. I wish I could have. I loved Kyoto. It was exactly what I needed after a week of debauchery in Tokyo. Of all the cities I've visited, it's still my favorite. Thank you for sharing this awesome picture, and for reminding me of my own cozy memory there.

Must be nice having a big bright LED sign literally direct in front of your window.

The streets look so clean. Do they have people sweeping them all the time or something?
