The Trump administration on Monday tossed out a rule on marine protection for whales and sea turtles caught in fishing nets off the West Coast.

The rule change was made despite the fishing industry's having proposed the measures in the first place, according to the Associated Press. The National Marine Fisheries Service, a division within the Commerce Department, said it decided the new protection rules were not warranted.

"Under the proposed regulations, caps would have been established for five marine mammal species and four sea turtle species," the agency explained in a final action published in the Federal Register Monday afternoon. "When any of the caps were reached, the fishery would have been closed for the rest of the fishing season and possibly through the following season."

The rules were proposed in 2016 under the Obama administration. The federal agency said the decision was based on an extensive federal study. "As a result of its analysis of the effects of the proposed rule, NMFS has decided that the changes covered in the proposed rule from 2016 are not warranted at this time."

Some conservation groups called the action one of the first by the administration to target protections for threatened species off the Pacific coast, according to AP.

So I read the article and did some research into it: Trump did not do this. The National Marine fisheries services are run by a man put in place by Obama.

So, The National Marine Fisheries Service is overseen by Samuel D Rauch who has been in the position for six years, here is a link (http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/aboutus/leadership.html) this is the current leadership of the department. Rauch has been leading the department since before Trump took office.

If you read the article they said that the department threw out the rule due to an ongoing study since 2016 and that they determined that the rule would not help/wouldn't be anymore effective than existing rules, not that the Trump administration said to not pass the rule but the click-bait article is saying Trump to trigger a reaction.

Edit 2: Some people are saying I am wrong. TBH my only interest in the truth in this matter and if I am wrong I will edit my comment so that is reflected. I am only going off the news articles and official releases so any additional information would be great.

Edit 3: In the interest of honesty someone provided me with more information, so the current "head" of said department like the top is Wilbur L. Ross and appointee of Trumps. However, I looked through his recent press releases and any other information and he hasn't said a word about this rule. Since the rule would have only affect "20 fisheries" as per the articles I can only assume at this time, since it was a rule and a minor one at that, that it probably didn't cross his desk and was handled by Mr. Rauch and he went off the study that has been ongoing since 2016.

Edit: Cleared up my language and put some more information in my post.

I can understand, not agree with but understand, if they revoked protections to make profits or whatnot. BUT WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS WHEN NO ONE WANTS IT!?
