Read the article, its actually a sweet story in the end. The guy had just had heart surgery, was having depression issues and the robbery was his cry for help. Now that he is on proper meds he feels like his old self, his wife was even at his court hearing with him to support this sentencing. Even the bank teller he frightened supported this sentencing. This story shows a rational application of unusual sentencing and a good judge making the decisions.
