I didn't realize how intrinsically my intellectual achievements were connected to my self-worth until I had a brain injury and had to struggle to learn to read and write and talk again.
It was a huge blow, but it's given me a chance to let other things about me surface and accept myself for who I am, not just what I do. It also helps that I'm old, and have begun to see the fruition of the most important investment I've ever made in my life: my children.
