Personal preference: I might say "a can of tuna," instead of canned tuna.
If I made tuna salad sandwiches, and I'm eating them on the train, then what's the bother? I'm a guy eating sandwiches, you don't know where I sourced that tuna, get off my back, what are you gonna do, check for my garbage for bombs cans?
But a person eating a can of tuna straight up? Definitely a terrorist.

Can't help but think of the time I watched a small Asian boy and his grandfather peel and eat hard-boiled eggs on the subway...

For me it's not because of the smell, but because it makes me want to eat some tuna really badly.
