Princess Elizabeth celebrates her 13th birthday on 21 April, 1939. Being her birthday, the young Princess was allowed to plan her own day and after opening her presents in the morning, she went riding in Windsor Great Park with the King and Princess Margaret, her younger sister.

Only months later, in September the same year, war would break out across Europe. The young Princess would, like thousands of other British citizens, become embroiled in the turmoil. In 1943, an article was published in The Spectator, where the author write:

'The people of Britain are beginning to take it a growing interest in the personality of their future Queen—only beginning, because so far Princess Elizabeth’s life has most rightly been spent in her home rather than in the public eye, and her future subjects know relatively little of her.'

That would all change within the decade following the end of the conflict.
