Chris Evans On Why He Extended His Marvel Studios Contract

Chris Evans has portrayed five different comic book characters across ten different movies in five different franchises over the course of twelve years. But most of those roles pale in comparison to the duty of playing Captain America.

Evans is giving the impression that his time in the star-spangled tights are coming to an end, but he decided to extend his stay in the universe just a bit longer for the Avengers: Infinity War sequel.

“I had six films in my Marvel contract, so I could have said after the third Avengers I was done, but they wanted to make the third and fourth Avengers films as a two-parter,” Evans said to the Telegraph. “They said they had so many other characters to fit in – Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ant Man – and couldn’t get them all into one movie.”

Though he wouldn’t give any spoilers regarding his character’s eventual fate, Evans did reveal that he decided to sign on for the fourth Avengers movie “because it made sense. It’s going to wrap everything up.”

It’s hard to imagine the Marvel Cinematic Universe without one of the characters that’s become so integral to it, but Evans seems to be looking forward to fulfilling that commitment. But he also recognizes the privilege its afforded him and looks back at the experience making the movies fondly.

“I’ve been on sets where you get a vibe that everyone’s making a different movie,” Evans said. “The director one, the actors another, the producers another one still. Marvel has a way of ensuring that on the day filming begins, everyone is making the same meal.”

Why we’ll no doubt miss him tossing that Vibranium shield at his foes in the future, we’ll look forward to and cherish the next Avengers films and hope they provide a fitting finale to the character’s amazing journey.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently in production and is scheduled to premiere in theaters May 4, 2018.

The expansive confirmed cast includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bethany, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, and Josh Brolin as the villain Thanos. Avengers: Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled sequel are filming back-to-back for a May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 release, respectively.
