If you get him tired through play, then give him his favorite treat while he's tired, you can gradually begin to pet him in "safe" places while he crunches the treat and is distracted. Skritch the base of his tail or do what we call "basketball head", where you pat his noggin gently like you're dribbling a tiny basketball. He obviously likes you or he wouldn't be so close in the first place. :)
After a while he'll associate pats with food and comfort.
