I knew an older guy (50s now) when I was in grad school. He programmed COBOL. He was responsible for all the state systems of NY. He could demand whatever he wanted. Unlimited PTO. 300K+ a year. Work remote. You name it.
They couldn't do shit, because no one else had his skills or wanted to have his skills.
My college program stopped offering C# as a 3rd semester elective in favour of COBOL because it's a government town and the federal revenue agency begged them to start teaching it
Let's set aside all of the shit talking that's going on for a minute and think about the fact that there's production software out there that's been successfully used and maintained for nearly forty years.
