The irony of a tobacco company owning a life insurance company

Authored by madcoversite.com and submitted by jaykirsch

I enjoyed your site, and I have a question. I used to work for a company called Franklin Life. For a time it was owned by American Brands, which was a tobacco company. I had heard that someone wrote a letter to Mad, pointing out the irony of a tobacco company owning a life insurance company. I'd like to get a copy of the MAD with this letter, but I don't know what issue it is. It would have to be in the 1980's or late 1970's. Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks to alert Mad reader, Tom, for finding these letters to the editor in issue #282, October 1988.

If they'd opened their own medical facility they'd have created the ultimate trifecta. Whether you get sick or don't, die or don't, someone's getting paid.

Mad Magazine in the 70s and 80s was a real cultural force. Particularly in the 70s, there was a lot of politics and adult content. I had a massive collection, but when I went away for a summer to work, my mom threw it out. I nearly broke into tears when I found out. Thankfully I was able to find them in a torrent recently, so I'm able to read them again.

That's it, we should force all multi million dollar companies to own a second company that has a conflict of interest with its original purpose, that way we really see what's what.
