You’ll be able to play compatible co-op and competitive games online by signing in with your Nintendo Account. Online play will be free for Nintendo Account holders until our paid online service launches in 2018.

After the free-trial period, most games will require a paid online service subscription from Nintendo in order to play online.

This service is only for Nintendo Switch. It does not affect online play or features for the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

I really hope the delay is due to a reaction to the so far poor online capabilities. If they're going to make us pay they should offer a service that's more valuable than the one we had for free.

So are they scrapping the 30-day game download? The wording seems to imply that you're able to download classic games freely instead of buying them piecemeal or only getting a trial.

I hope they offer standalone downloads as well as a Netflix-esque subscription service for all of their VC games. A $20 access for the entire Nintendo back catalog would be an absolute steal. Hell, even if it's just NES/SNES games, that's a great value.

$19.99 USD annually is a good price, as long as the service works well.
