While performing a routine vehicle inspection, a taxi with two men drove to the front gate of Khan’s base in a suspicious manner. Khan ordered his soldiers to “hit the dirt” and took about ten steps to the car while motioning for it to stop. That’s when the two men in the taxi detonated their explosives, killing themselves, Khan and two Iraqi soldiers.

None of Khan’s soldiers were killed in the blast.

He ordered his men to take cover and approached the threat alone. The terrorists could not get any closer than the point at which Khan stopped them, and blew their bomb up there. Khan's bravery meant sacrificing his life for that of many, many others who would have been killed if the vehicle advanced.

Khan was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart posthumously.

I didn't realize the VA had so many different emblems of belief for headstones. PDF warning.

Graves like this are always heartbreaking, even more so when you look at the date of birth compared to the date of death.
