This really is the peak of the original trilogy. Luke went from being a bit whiny and getting fucked by a yeti to launching a single handed assault on one of the biggest crime organizations in the galaxy and taking on Darth Vader by himself. We worry he is losing himself to the dark side, and being driven to kill Vader (by anger and by Palpatine). This battle is all kinds of a mind fuck for the audience. We cheer, wanting him to kill Vader. But, it's his dad, and he doesn't even want to kill him. Its complicated and beautiful.
