When we had to put our cat down (she was 17 w/ Kidney failure), I was honestly taken aback by how kind the vets were.

I was 23 years old, I'd had my cat for almost as long as I can remember. Holding her in my arms while she died is something I'll never forget. I legitimately couldn't put her down for an hour after.

The a couple days later in the mail, we got a card signed by the entire vets office saying how sorry for our loss they were and how loved our kitty must have been.

The point is that, it felt good to know that somebody understood the difficulty of losing a pet. A lot of people might think "it's just a cat," but obviously people's pets are members of the family. Signs like this are worth it - even if just for the gesture.

EDIT: Thank you for sharing all of your stories with me. It's warming to see how much people really care about their furry (and non-furry!) family members.

I work at a very forward thinking emergency veterinarian and we have a TLC room. A whole room dedicated to this exact situation. It is roughly 4-5x larger than an exam room, emulates a living room setting with a couch, big comfy chairs, and dimming lights (nothing like an exam room).

It has a separate exit within the room as well so the family doesn't need to go back out through the lobby.

My father had two chocolate labs, sisters. Just recently lost one due to a fairly common form of spinal cancer. When he was in the waiting room after Mocha had died, Cocoa, the healthy lab, was there with him.

A woman walked out of the back and was in tears. (Dad said she walked in with a very weak looking dog, but did not walk out with one.) She sat just outside the door and silently wept, constantly dabbing her eyes with a paper towel.

Cocoa stands up when dad isn't looking and walks over to her, gently laying her head in the woman's lap. The woman sniffed and laughed, thanking Cocoa for the kind gesture and petting her head.

Dad said the woman left with a smile about fifteen minutes later.

I just wanted to post this here. Not sure why.
