I've been into metal since 1986 and this weird defensiveness about liking metal is a holdover from the 80s. In the 80s, lots of people really were scared of Satanism, vandalism, teenage delinquency, etc. and were constantly connecting metal to that shit.
But this is 2017 and I don't know anyone who still thinks that way about metal fans anymore except for maybe a few rabid super-Christian types in East Dipshit, Arkansas or wherever. Most people don't give a shit anymore. This particular war has been fought and won. The defensiveness about your preferred genre is just silly at this point.
