Hey guys - I remember this making the news in New Zealand a few years ago so I'll dig up some sources for you:
First, it is not fake.
Second, he had cut off his electronic bracelet and fled before posting this message, but he was found very soon after (maybe 1 day?) 300km/200miles away in Wellington and he had to finish the rest of his sentence in jail (6 months).
