Edit: To the people coming from /r/all, here's an in-depth explanation. TL;DR: You have one byte, which has 8 bits. With 8 bits you can count all the way from 0 to 255, which means that you can give every person in the group an 8-bit number which is used as their ID, and you'll have 256 unique IDs to hand out.

Well computers use zeros and ones, and 256 is a multiple of 1, so it kind of makes sense.
