Serious question: would the average American in 1941 recognize the Chinese flag? They might recognize the Japanese flag just because of war propaganda I guess and know it's not that.

My Grandfather used to tell the story of how after hearing about Pearl Harbor a group of men who worked with him decided to beat up the Japanese man who lived down the street. When my Grandfather heard about it he went running after them yelling "he's Chinese"!

I read that most American-Chinese at that time also wore Chinese armbands or patches so they wouldn't be mistaken for Japanese.
