Again, a total misconception about pre-existing conditions. Here's the TRUTH about what was happening pre-ACA and what health insurers (Republicans) want to return to:

1.John faithfully pays health insurance premiums year after year. 2. John gets very sick (cancer, stroke, heart attack etc). 3. Health insurer refuses to renew John's policy (at any price). 4. John's policy lapses because health insurer refused to renew policy. John now has no insurance. 5. Health Insurance Company now willing to sell John a policy that excludes coverage for John's cancer (heart attack, stroke etc) as a pre-existing condition.

This was how health insurers made certain they never had to pay big costs prior to 1996. If anyone got seriously ill, they simply refused to renew coverage and FORCED people who got sick to become uninsured and then claimed those people had pre-existing conditions when they sold them a new policy. That changed in 1996 with the passage of HIPAA which required insurers to offer renewal but did not regulate the price (allowing insurers to offer to renew but at very high premiums if an employee in a group plan or individual insured became sick).

That happened every single day. The majority of bankruptcies were the direct result of Americans losing their health coverage because they became ill. Americans paid THOUSANDS of dollars in health insurance premiums for coverage for the common cold but which didn't provide any long term protection against serious illnesses. And - this is EXACTLY what the health insurance industry wants to return to - they want the right to charge very high premiums if you get sick.

Edit-1: What is amazing is how (why) this information is so unknown. Edit-2: I should clarify my experience with health insurance dates to the 1977-1995 time period. There are some regulations I do not have experience with (for example Cobra and continuing coverage after termination of employment and other possible state or federal regulations enacted subsequently such as HIPP). Edit-3. So, I did some quick research and needed to correct my initial post which was accurate for pre-1996. In 1996 HIPPA was passed which required insurers to offer renewal but did not regulate the cost that could be charged for renewal and group and individual coverages were effectively not renewed because the offer to renew was at such high premiums that priced insureds out of the market.
