If I had to guess, I'd say these probably correlate with average distance driven per year or something similar.

Having lived in Wyoming/Montana my whole life this matches what we have been told. Driver fatigue from long distance driving gets a lot of people the coupled with the fact you might not be found for hours doesn't help. Also drunk driving heard countless people say they were only driving down dirt roads which is still bad but your less likely to be found.

I grew up in North Idaho and spent a lot of time in Montana. Yes, road hypnosis is an issue, as are high speed limits, long distances, and fewer hospitals. Most of my road trips growing up covered 100 miles or more (even for a day at the beach or going on a hike). Here are some handy tips to stay alert and awake while driving in desolate places ... 1. Chewing gum (prevents drowsiness) 2. Brushing your teeth (prevents drowsiness) 3. If you see a deer, flash your lights and honk your horn to freak them out and run away from the road 4. If the deer is already crossing, steer the opposite direction that the deer is running (so if it's running from right to left across the road, steer to the right side; and if there is oncoming traffic, just hit the stupid deer and pray for the best) 5. If oncoming traffic is blinding you at night, use the white stripes on the side of the road as a guide until the traffic is gone 6. If oncoming traffic at night persists, pull over from time to time and put some cool water on your eyelids to help relieve your eyes 7. Always wear shades on a sunny day, or you will get a headache 8. If someone is driving faster than you, pull over and let them go by as soon as possible 9. Just be engaged while driving. Don't be stupid. Don't get distracted. Don't get lazy. Driving is dangerous and if you actually keep your head in the game, you will prevent yourself from being one of these statistics
