Early thirty-something here. A year or so ago, my wife and I went to a first-time-home-buyers class in our town. I think it was like five bucks a person per time (it was done in like...three or four sessions, I think). The lady that ran it had a ton of information about lots of different programs that can help people who are struggling to scrape together the cash for a down payment. We took advantage of some of those, and are now in a small starter home that has way more space and costs ~$200 less per month than what we were paying in rent.

If you're looking to be a first time homeowner, look for classes like that in your area. There's probably shit out there that can help you that you just don't know about. You won't be getting a house like the in the OP, but if you can do it, it's just better than renting.
