Two things: 1) They're largely made by hand and those lil' minies usually cost more to make than the retail cost of the tents they're modelled after. 2) If you work retail at a place that has these displays, it's almost a guarantee that someone will try to buy it from you for their cat. Source: I work in the camping dept. at REI and have spoken to reps from several companies regarding this.
I've been offered $100 for these tents before. Where I work, most of the time we can't discard them, but when new models arrive and old ones are phased out, we can give them away. I have two right now.
