The mural on the outside of the church was painted by Kenny Scharf, an artist best known for his work in the ‘80s in New York’s East Village. Inside, Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel was enlisted for the vibrant designs on the ceiling. “It’s a visceral experience to walk into a 113-year-old church and see this much color,” Berke told 9News.

And it probably looks pretty cool when you’re stoned, too.

Despite the marijuana affiliation, Berke insists: “this is not just a bunch of lazy stoners getting together to get high. We really want to impact [the] neighborhood. We want to do great things for the community.”

In California my very white self was allowed to register with a local native american tribe which allowed me to buy pot from their store. I even went to a meeting at a park once with the chief.
