took a photo of her ailing dog Wallace at the annual Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, she had no idea how popular that one shot would become. The endearing snapshot won Travel + Leisure’s photo contest in the spring of 2012 and caught the attention of many all over the internet, including original Star Trek star George Takei...
“Wallace had just had cancer surgery and I really wasn’t sure how long I’d have him, and I wanted portraits of him being happy,” she explained. “I am pleased to let you know he’s still trucking along, being adorable.”
There’s nothing more genuine than the excitement of a dog let off his leash, but capturing that excitement still took a little bit of choreography. “I had (the other photographer) walk Wallace down a row of tulips, and then undo his leash. I would call for him, and he’d come running to me as fast as his little legs could carry him...”
“(Going viral) is a big surprise, and there’s delight and anger at the same time. I was commenting thousands of times a week on blogs and social media ‘That’s my photo!’ and was being ignored.
It was shocking to me to see a share of my photo, without name or credit, to be liked and shared 19,000 times here, 32,000 times there.”
