Not all alpacas spit, but all are capable of doing so. Occasionally the projectile contains only air and a little saliva, although alpacas commonly bring up acidic stomach contents and project it onto their chosen targets. Spitting is mostly reserved for other alpacas.

Story time. While I was backpacking the PCT I spent an evening chatting with a fellow thru-hiker about his experience working on an alpaca farm. He told me about this one particularly ornery alpha who would bully the other alpacas. One day while cleaning the pen the alpha came over to him and spit in his face. He was pretty pissed and not about to be a beta to this alpaca so he started to hock up his phlegm and proceeded to spit it into the alphas face. The alpha dipped his head in shame and the defeat was noticed by the other alpacas. He said he never punked any of the others and avoided him while he cleaned the pen.
