The lock nut and shaft the handle is attached by are real metal. It turns fairly freely, and tension is adjusted by the lock nut It is attached to my head via fabric tape which was surprisingly effective. It only came off once when some guy wasnt paying attention and crashed into me while I was sitting, retaped and it was fine. It did NOT hurt to remove, even though I expected it to.
