Anyone notice the quote on the casket lid. "Omnia mutantur, nihil interit"("everything changes, nothing perishes"), by Ovid in his Metamorphoses. The quote is also used by Neil Gaiman in "The Sandman".
This isn't a mortuary class. These are medical students from that time period and this is their gross anatomy club. There are many of these pictures in the special collections library at UVA. The black guy in the front is the worker they used to get the bodies, usually from black graveyards in the area.

How odd, I saw a similar photo for the first time today- class of 1909. This is fascinating, and more entertaining the deeper you look!
