As a kid, I thought of Homer as some dumb, drunk, incompetent.

Now I realize he has job security, a wife that supports him through whatever dumb shit he decides to pull, and a nice family.

This is a huge reason why I love the Simpsons over Family guy. Though they're both about a dysfunctional family, homer actually loves his family. So much of the golden age of the Simpsons stories revolve around Homer doing something stupid on his way to doing something for his kids, wife, etc. (I.e. when homer tries to buy a saxophone for Lisa). Peter just sabotages his family.

There are genuine, heartfelt moments in the Simpsons whereas with family Guy there seems to be a "I'm gonna divorce you" or "I have no emotional investment in this family" oneliner in every episode practically. Because Family Guy treats the family as a vehicle for jokes, the Griffins just feel like a group of people rather than a family with unique relationships with each other. This is one of the things the Simpsons got so right consistently and they felt real for it.
