Capcom announced its plans to evolve the renowned RE Engine back in October 2023 to better support future games. The studio called this REX Engine, the neXt generation of REach the Moon
Like the name suggests, it is not a new engine, but what RE Engine will become once Capcom has implemented everything that they want. The REX engine has technically been used in recent Capcom titles, but it is more of a version between RE and RE:X.
As such, it hasn’t received an official rebranding because the studio has yet to meet all the milestones to call it complete. However, we now have an update on the engine’s official name, suggesting Capcom is getting closer to the public rebranding we have all been waiting for.
The RE:X Engine trademarks were filed in both the US and the EU a few days ago. These don’t provide more information than what we already knew, but that’s not really important. Capcom already gave plenty of key details to give us a general idea of where things are headed.
What’s more important is the official name of the engine itself being confirmed, and the fact that they are closer to a public rebrand of the RE Engine. Would we see the new iteration of the iconic RE Engine logo in upcoming Capcom games? Possibly.
It is best not to get too far ahead of ourselves and to treat this simply as confirmation of the engine’s title. But do you think Resident Evil 10 (RE X) will be the first game to mark the beginning of a complete RE:X Engine?
