The castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge to protect the area from French invasions during the Hundred Years' War. It is known for its square layout, its round corner towers, and the wide moat that surrounds the structure. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodiam_Castle
When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest castle in all of England.
This is relatively right around the corner from me and I've visited quite a few times. It's a beautiful castle, quite defensible.
I went on a tour there last year on medieval graffiti which was excellent where I learned "apotropaic marks" is the proper tern for witch scratchings. The castle is full of them. Also, there's a 30-ft deep pool dug into one of the towers and no one really knows its function. It wasn't a well, possibly a water pit for eels or even a jacuzzi type thing. Moreover, the interior layout changed at some point and the kitchen was moved in the original chapel.
