58 here and I also don't recognize this country. I travel often and far and I've never felt embarrassed to be an American, but I can't honestly say that anymore. Most people I meet during my travels believe that the vast majority of us are MAGA Trump supporters. When I tell them otherwise there have been a few that have basically said, "then why don't you guys do something about it?". It's actually a very good question.
