A man in Behchokǫ̀, N.W.T., is facing criminal charges after allegedly kayaking while drunk.
RCMP say in a news release on Friday that the "bizarre incident" involved a stolen kayak on Marion Lake on Monday.
Police say someone reported to them that an intoxicated person had stolen their kayak and was paddling it around with a snow shovel.
When officers got to the lake, they found the boat capsized and the man in the water, apparently too drunk to swim to shore. Police say they helped get him out of the water and then arrested him.
The 63-year-old man was charged with impaired operation of a vessel, and refusal to provide a breath sample.
In a written statement, RCMP Cpl. Kevin Kim reminded people that under the Criminal Code, it is an offence to operate any sort of vessel while impaired, including non-motorized craft like canoes or kayaks.
"On the water, the risks are higher; conditions can change quickly, there’s limited equipment, and response times are often longer, which makes these incidents especially dangerous for both those involved and for emergency responders,” he said.
