More than three years after the Sainte-Soline water protest of 25 March 2023, the French State filed a civil claim on 12 May 2026 seeking almost €53,000 from Loïc for damaged police vehicles and related costs. The claim appears to rely on a broad theory of collective responsibility, treating him as financially liable for damage he is not accused of having personally caused.
This amount has not yet been confirmed by a civil judge, but it represents a major new legal and financial threat. Loïc had already been convicted in the criminal case, although his lawyers stress that he did not burn the vehicle he tagged and did not steal the gendarme’s vest he briefly held up.
He has also taken the case to the European Court of Human Rights, arguing that his conviction threatens freedom of expression and the right to protest. For supporters, this case is bigger than one person: it raises the question of whether protesters can be made financially responsible for damage they did not personally cause.
