What's the law on guns in South Africa?

About 33 people are shot dead every day in South Africa, according to Gun Free South Africa, a charity working to reduce gun violence.

Under South Africa's Firearms Control Act (FCA) 2000, people over the age of 21 are legally allowed to own one handgun or shotgun for self-defence.

But it is illegal to keep or use someone else's gun, buy a gun from an unlicensed dealer, not report a stolen or lost gun to police, point a gun at someone and to fire a gun in public without "good cause".

A gun licence can only be issued after the applicant has passed tests to qualify for a competency certificate.

Gun owners have to renew their licence regularly to ensure they are still "fit and proper" to own the gun and that their weapon has not been lost, stolen or illegally traded.

Public spaces such as schools can be declared Firearm Free Zones.

There are about three million guns registered to South African citizens, Gun Free South Africa says.

The charity says roughly 24 guns a day are reported lost or stolen in the country.

There are major xenophobic events happening in South Africa right now. People believe that other Africans are coming to steal their jobs while the lower-than-dog-shit government are the actual criminals. Funny how people on the same level of society will massacre each other while those at the top laugh in their yachts.

10 armed men? I suspect the final victim count is going to be way higher.

Preliminary investigations reveal that 12 people died as a result of the attack. Eight adult males and three adult females were declared dead at the scene, while one additional male victim later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. At least nine other victims were transported to various medical facilities for treatment of gunshot wounds.

It is alleged that more than 10 suspects were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland. The suspects allegedly entered the informal settlement through both entrances and moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.

The motive for the attack is currently unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage.
