France and Cyprus to sign defense pact for French deployment to island

Authored by politico.eu and submitted by No_Feature_1184

The agreement will define the terms under which French forces can be stationed, train and operate in Cyprus while respecting national sovereignty. It will cover military coordination and interoperability, defense technology and industry links, joint military exercises and educational activities, personnel exchanges and administrative arrangements for forces operating on each other’s territory.

The agreement has stirred controversy since plans for it were announced in April by Christodoulides during a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to the island.

Cyprus has been divided into a Turkish Cypriot north and a Greek Cypriot south since Turkish forces invaded in 1974 in response to a coup backed by Greece. Ankara does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus, which is an EU member country recognized internationally as the sole sovereign authority over the whole island. The Turkish Cypriot north is recognized only by Ankara.

The Turkish Cypriot administration declared the agreement null and void soon after it was announced and expressed concerns that it could alter the balance of power on the island, disregard the rights of the Turkish Cypriots and create tensions. The Turkish Cypriot administration also argued that the Republic of Cyprus lacks the authority to sign such an agreement on behalf of the island as a whole.

I'll give the french their credit from it stances on israel attacks on Lebanon( plus anti-Hezbollah stance mirroring it stances against israel attacks on lebanon), to the joint Saudi-French maneuvers at the UN to support a just peaceful two state solution, suporting a independent Palestinan state alongside Israel, and condemnation of hamas and it attacks on october the 7th, France is playing a role to bring Armenia into the EU away from russian sphere of influence , leading the role of spearheading European rearmament, facilitating payments with china outside the dollar in Chinese yuans (to depend less on a poltically unstable United Statea), also France and Cyprus signing a defense pact beside the fact the Neo-Ottoman turks will throw a fit, re-enagement with Africa (after a humiliating retreat from the shahel) with the historic 2026 Africa Forward summit, growing Moroccan french ties (which has caused friction with Algeria), etc.

I respect what Macron is doing even if I dont believe in everything he doing, he is ruffling the Turks, Trump, maga, and Russian fethers, plus macron is making moves not seen since Charles DeGaulle, kudos to him.

This is quite huge… that Turkey isn’t happy about it isn’t that surprising but not sure that nor Israel nor Russia will like this, because this will put France way closer to Liban and Armenia. Also not sure how Iran will see this, but not sure France is much of a concern for them.

I also wonder if this was done behind Brit back or at Brit demands.

With what is going on, won’t be surprised if UK feeling a bit brittle at the moment, since their ’special’ relation with US isn’t going that strong, called France for help, so that united their voice had better chances to be heard… but if Brit actually did this, it will most likely cost them.
