An Australian airport was partially evacuated after a suspicious item discovered during security screening turned out to be a laser hair removal device packed alongside a hot chocolate container.

The incident took place at Avalon Airport, with flights temporarily disrupted while police and specialist officers investigated the luggage.

Security response triggered by unusual luggage contents

According to The Guardian, airport staff alerted authorities after identifying a concerning item during screening, prompting the evacuation of passengers in certain sections of the terminal as a precaution.

Investigators later determined the luggage contained a laser hair removal device stored alongside a cylindrical drinking chocolate container.

Police confirmed the item was not dangerous, while the passenger associated with the bag was questioned and later released without charge.

Footage shown by local news outlets showed disposal robots entering airport terminals to remove the object before it was discovered to be an everyday object.

Flights at Avalon Airport were delayed while emergency services examined the luggage and secured the area. Operations later resumed once the terminal was cleared, although an X-ray machine caused delays in screening after police broke the device attempting to reach the luggage.

Airports aren’t uncommon staging grounds for strange events, it seems. Back in February, travelers found themselves trapped overnight on a plane after their flight was cancelled. In the meantime, Japan confirmed earlier this month plans to open a fully Pokemon-themed airport, complete with themed food.

I was flying through a country in Asia with some battery-powered (alkaline batteries, this is decades back) speakers in my checked baggage.

I heard my name paged with a request to report to my gate, so I did, and introduced myself to the staff behind the counter, and was immediately swarmed by at least 6 security personnel (that I could see as my head was slammed down on the counter and my arms pinioned behind me) and taken into custody.

They perp-walked me through the airport, back to their offices, and showed me my backpack, which they'd already marked and cut into, and told me to open it, all while some very itchy-trigger-finger types watched.

I opened my bag, showed them the speakers, took the batteries out, they interrogated me for a while, and then escorted me out of the airport. Since it was late at night, I had to wait until they opened the main doors in the morning to get back in, get to my day room, and then try to stay awake for 6 hours or so until my flight left.

Security forces the world over do not rise to the level of the occasion, they fall to the level of their training.

I thought it was weird when I saw someone clipping their toenails in the airport but this is nuts.
