My parents bought their first home AND paid it off while in grad school with part-time research position in 1973-75. And before that they took an entire gap year to travel Mexico paid for by summer jobs. They graduated with zero student loan debt. Their parents (my grandparents) had a hoarding problem because they grew up in the depression and then fought in WW2. So I'm going to say yes, the boomers were doing better than their parents.
