I had to look this up as I have never seen such a thing. Apparently it was just to double the plug inputs on a single two outlet panel to keep up with the rise of home electronics in that time period. Old electrical plugs didn't have grounding, and the plugs themselves were very skinny, allowing 4 items to be plugged into one outlet. Manufactured by GE in the 1950s.

Clearly wouldnt work with todays fatter profile plugs.

I found the same plug in a house I was getting inspected for possibly buying.

The inspector pulled a chair away from a wall showing this.... Then just started laughing and moved the chair back.

The inspection was over 40 pages or issues. I did not buy the house. Best $250 I ever spent.
