Everyone should know that it is possible to deactivate those tear gas canisters.
Pro democracy protestors in Hong Kong were doing it and there are lots of good videos and discussions on Reddit about how and why it works.

Call me crazy, and maybe I'm misremembering things, I thought pepper spray and such were only supposed to be deployed to deter violent protesters, just maceing people literally sitting on their knees, that is just excessive force, right?
