She was born and died in Germany. She would tell me stories about everything and anything. She grew up during the first world war. She was taking care of my Grandmother before and during the 2nd world war. She watched technology emerge incomprehensible to the time when she was born.
My mother is approaching 95. She's healthy, mobile, alert, and as active as she can be, still living in the home she moved into with my Dad in 1954. She's watched most of her old friends die, but has made new friends. She's seen the town and neighborhood where she's lived for almost 70 years change. She still has the same phone number and license plate she acquired 70 years ago. She's also experienced the joy of meeting grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I can't imagine what it must be like, and doubt that I will reach that age.
