WASHINGTON – Former President Bill Clinton’s spokesperson called for the Justice Department to release all of its documents about the investigation of accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, to avoid insinuating wrongdoing against people "who have been repeatedly cleared."

Pictures of Clinton, including one in a hot tub and others with celebrities, were among documents the Justice Department released Friday, Dec. 19, under a new law.

But the department was criticized for withholding hundreds of thousands of pages of additional documents by women who accused Epstein of abuse, by lawmakers and by Clinton's deputy chief of staff Angel Urena.

Clinton needs no protection from releasing all remaining documents that mention or contain a photograph of him, Urena said in a social media post on Monday, Dec. 22.

But “selective releases to imply wrongdoing” would confirm “the widespread suspicion” that releases are about “insinuation” implying wrongdoing rather than transparency, Urena said.

Congress approved a law, which President Donald Trump signed, demanding the release by Dec. 19 of all department files that didn’t name alleged victims, portray child sexual abuse or hurt the prosecution of cases.

But in releasing hundreds of thousands of documents, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche acknowledged Friday, Dec. 19, that hundreds of thousands more documents were still being reviewed. He also told Congress some documents might be withheld under legal privileges covering the internal deliberations of lawyers or communications with clients.

Blanche said more documents would be released within weeks. The law directs the department to list the documents withheld from public release and explain the reasons within 15 days.

Two House members threatened to seek to hold Attorney General Pam Bondi in contempt for the partial release of documents. But Bondi has said the Trump administration is the most transparent in history.

Trump called in November for the Justice Department to investigate Clinton’s ties to Epstein. The former president faces a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee.

But Urena pointed to a Vanity Fair interview published Dec. 16 with Trump’s White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, that said Trump was wrong to say Clinton visited Epstein’s private Caribbean island, Little Saint James.

“There is no evidence” those visits happened, Wiles told Vanity Fair. “The president was wrong about that.”
