It's been reported by Game Spark (via Automaton Media) that the Japanese eSports association Care recently held its 12th biannual tournament. Within this event, players competed against one another in Tekken 8.
The unique thing about this tournament is that all of the players were Japanese senior citizens. Hisako Sakai, 92 years old, ended up winning the whole thing with Claudio as her character.
In the grand finals, she ended up defeating Goro Sugiyama, a 74-year-old Lili player. Care e-Sports has been slowly uploading videos of the entire event.
While this was an especially unique type of tournament considering its participants, the Care association went all out and treated it like any other tournament that you'd see within the fighting game community. Participants were handed arcade sticks to use. There were even commentators and the whole operation was streamed live as it happened.
According to Automaton Media, the Care association is a Mie prefecture-based organization whose goal is to "create an environment in which the elderly can casually participate in eSports." They seek to promote healthy and active lives for senior citizens.
They've apparently been hosting tournaments since 2019 starting with Shogi and Othello (Reversi). Based on the footage, it's quite clear that these senior citizens are giving it their all during these Tekken 8 matches.
