Main government parties are pushing laws to restrict National radio and television. Reduce their finances, make it way easier to fire general director of this National radio and television. Basically push same laws that happened in Hungary, until no private independent media left in Hungary.
Spreading awareness of what is happening in Lithuania
Main person pushing this is Remigijus Zemaitaitis, who is convicted by court to be anti-semite. His words are the same that are spread by Kremlin (supposedly Kremlin's puppet)
Public service media are under political and financial pressures in a number of EU countries from governments attempting to increase control, including by manipulating governance structures and influencing editorial coverage.
At the same time, budget cuts or freezes have limited broadcasters' ability to operate independently, hitting the quality of content.
Police said about 10,000 people gathered at the Lithuanian parliament to express their opposition to the proposals to loosen restrictions on dismissing LRT's director general.
The amendment from the populist Nemunas Dawn party was approved late last month and would allow the broadcaster's council to remove the director general with a simple majority, rather than the current two-thirds requirement.
With near-unanimous support from Lithuania's governing coalition, lawmakers also voted to freeze LRT's budget from 2026 until 2028.
There are also concerns that the proposed changes to LRT's financing and management practices do not align with the European Media Freedom Act, which is designed to protect media pluralism and independence in EU member states, and could be unconstitutional.
