that is thick where it is cut but notice how it gets slimmer at the top? The M60 had a 'shot trap' just below the turret that could deflect the round into that thinner armor. See the seat right in the middle? That dude could be disintegrated if the shot hit a bit below the barrel. Here is a recreation of the WW2 Tiger II 'shot trap' to explain it better.

And yet, still a death trap compared to the M1.
This brings back memories. I used to be an M60A3 crewman. Did a year in Korea and 2½ on Ft Lewis. Then 8 in the NG where I transitioned to M1s.
