My wife organized a family outing to a really cool “Sumo + Sushi” event this past weekend at the Palace of Fine Arts theater in San Francisco. We got there early and were among the very first people escorted to our “General Admission” seats on a raised platform dead center of the ring.
The show itself was an absolute blast, broken into three segments: first, a demonstration of sumo strength, conditioning, and flexibility training, and then a demo of the rules of a sumo match (including highly entertaining examples of what you’re NOT allowed to do).
Finally, we were treated to a mini sumo tournament leading to a final champion. As an added bonus, a few brave souls from the audience were invited onstage to try their luck - it was quite eye-opening to see the size and strength of these athletes in comparison to regular folks!
The whole event was MC’d by Konishiki Yasokichi, a legendary Samoan-American sumo from Hawai’i who was the first non-Japanese wrestler to reach the second-highest ranking in the sport. He was incredibly charming and did a great job of introducing newcomers like us to the sport.
Of course, I was excited to get pics and our center placement and raised seating game me a perfect angle to get some really fun shots. I shot this photo with my Sony Alpha a6700 and mostly used my 85mm f1.8 lens. My goal was to capture the visual incongruity of these massive men defying gravity with their elegant movements - it really is an amazing thing to witness in person.
