Democrats scored major victories in the first election of President Trump’s second term, as CNN overnight projected Democrats will win governorships in Virginia and New Jersey, as well as Zohran Mamdani’s win in New York City.

Here’s a look at some of the results:

• New York City: Democrat Zohran Mamdani will win New York City’s mayoral race, CNN projects, beating Andrew Cuomo, who was attempting a political comeback after resigning from the governor’s office in 2021. Mamdani will be New York City’s first Muslim mayor and the first South Asian to hold the office.

• New Jersey: Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill will win the gubernatorial race in New Jersey, CNN projects, beating her Republican rival, former state lawmaker Jack Ciattarelli. Sherrill — a 53-year-old former Navy helicopter pilot, attorney and mother of four — was first elected to Congress in 2018 as part of a blue wave in Trump’s first term in office. Sherrill will become New Jersey’s first female Democratic governor.

• Virginia: Democratic former Rep. Abigail Spanberger will win the gubernatorial race in Virginia, CNN projects. Spanberger, 46, who is a mother of three and served in law enforcement and the CIA before entering politics, will become Virginia’s first female governor.

Democrat Ghazala Hashmi, who is projected to be Virginia’s lieutenant governor, will become the first Muslim woman elected statewide.

Democrat Jay Jones won the race to become Virginia’s next attorney general, overcoming the disclosure of text messages in which he suggested a former legislative colleague should be shot.

• California: California voters will approve Gov. Gavin Newsom’s move to redraw the state’s congressional maps, CNN’s Decision Desk projects. The measure will allow Democrats to replace congressional lines drawn by the state’s independent commission with new ones that make five US House seats more favorable for the governor’s party.

The blue wave came a year late. People are pissed and it’s showing in the polls. Republicans will be sweating after tonight, Trump and congress are not doing anything to change these voters minds.

I'm someone that hates gerrymandering. It's damaging to democracy regardless of which party is doing it.

That said...I don't know what other options are available when you have a person like Trump leading the Republican Party and outright calling for the open rigging of elections and the undermining of democracy. If Democrats do nothing, then they just roll over and accept the continued erosion of democracy and our institutions.

So as sad as I am to see this, I think it's really our only option right now. But I worry that in the longrun, it's just accelerating the lack of voter power in non-statewide elections.
