Back in the 1200s, Bologna was one of the 10 biggest cities in Europe thanks to its super-old famous university. The city had around 80 towers built both as status symbols (just like today in Manhattan..) and as defenses because of the civil war between Guelph (pro-Pope) and Ghibelline (pro-Emperor) families, which often resulted in murders.

Today 23 medieval towers are still standing (some shortened, some partially collapsed, some hidden inside houses..) and in this pic you can spot almost all of them. How many can you count?

Bologna is such a cool city. Bristling to the brim with culture and history. Amazing food. Amazing coffee. What’s not to love?

Only did a short stopover there last year but will be back eventually. :-)

Can't quite see the carts full of hay... but I know they're there.
