Mark Carney says Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he came to Canada
Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he travelled to Canada. Carney responded “yes” to the question posed by British journalist Mishal Husain on her podcast, which was released this morning.
Re-stating Canada’s longstanding support of a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine (the latter of which Canada has officially recognized as a state), Carney said that the Netanyahu government’s actions “were explicitly designed to end any possibility of a state of Palestine, in violation of the UN charter and going against Canadian government policy of whatever political stripe since 1947.”
When the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, then-prime minister Justin Trudeau also said that he would be arrested if he stepped foot on Canadian soil.
