Russian air defenses reportedly accidentally shot down one of their own warplanes overnight while attempting to intercept Ukrainian drones, Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said during a broadcast on Apostrof TV on October 17.

“They were repelling Ukrainian attacks so actively that they ended up shooting down their own aircraft over Crimea,” Pletenchuk said.

“The fighting continues. They are now collecting all available information on the peninsula.”

Pletenchuk added that following the overnight strikes on Russian-occupied Crimea, another major fire broke out at a local oil depot.

Monitoring channels later reported that the downed aircraft was likely a Russian Su-30SM fighter jet.

Earlier, a Russian air defense system reportedly opened fire on a civilian airliner approaching Moscow, narrowly avoiding a deadly incident after mistaking the passenger jet for an incoming drone.

So they got one of their own jets and almost took out another airliner. I wonder if they even managed to hit any of the drones?
