When 4-year-old Luca Silva of Northridge, California, was practicing ordering his own food, his mom, Callie Foster, stood nearby, cheering him on.
Her friend Courtney was recording this sweet milestone to share with Callie’s husband and family in Brazil. But what happened next turned an ordinary meal into an unforgettable moment.

“Watching them communicate took my breath away,” said Callie. “As a parent of a child who communicates differently, I’m often the bridge between Luca and the world; stepping in to interpret or advocate. But in this moment, I didn’t have to. The world met him halfway.”
For Callie, the moment meant everything to her as a mom.
“When Luca was born, we had so many fears about how he would communicate and be understood,” she said. “Meeting people like this cashier, who reflected that same kindness back; it reaffirms that the world is capable of so much goodness when inclusion is the goal.”
